"Michael Berg's writing has great sense of place and emotional impact. We need more writers who aren't afraid to tackle social issues."
—Janice Sims, author of This Time Forever and Waiting for You

"In this dark, tortured tale of the hopelessness that breeds cyclical violence and abuse, Michael Berg lays out the tragedies that poverty and the ineffective policies of the state child welfare system can wreak upon the lives of the innocent."
—Donna Washington, author of The Story of Kwanzaa

Set in a time after abortion is outlawed, Abandoned in the Maze tells the story of Irene Cobb, a seventeen-year-old girl who is put into the custody of the state when her mother is arrested for aiding a shadowy pro-choice group. Irene and her younger sister enter the Trench Center, a corrupt state-run facility where children are the cogs in a system that pays more for medicated kids than unmedicated ones. Separated, each sister finds her own ways of coping with the neglect and abuse of the Trench Center. Upon her release, Irene returns home, hoping to reunite with her mother and sister, but soon learns that the lessons of the Trench Center will follow her no matter where she goes.
