The Clone |
In 1969, while part of a committee to authenticate the Shroud of Turin, a scientist steals a sample from the shroud and succeeds in cloning the Biblical Christ. Fast-forward thirty-five years: Jesus Christian, the clone, is held by local police in a small Texas town for violating the Patriot Act prohibiting seditious activity. High-profile defense attorney Johnnie Coulter and stumbling-drunk, once-great novelist Jim Bob Howard arrive to find a powder keg ready to explode. Locals are both entranced and outraged by Christian. Protesters and law enforcement, vicious and out of their league, join in while the case draws racial violence and the FBI's interest. As Coulter begins his legal machinations, Howard is enchanted by Jesus Christian's simple message, and his dangerously naive, loving world view. Howard, caught up in the fracas created by the protestors, rubs and is rubbed the wrong way by police in an attempt to get to the truth about this man. A racist faction's demonstration explodes into violence, threatening to repeat history. Will they destroy Jesus Christian and his message? |
